Review: Funfetti Scones at Buttercelli Bakeshop

Funfetti scones are one of my specialties. I make them for every occasion, every holiday, every goodie basket of baked goods, and I’ll probably put them on every second tea tier until people yells “Stop! We are sick of Funfetti Cake Batter Scones!” Says no one, ever. Who could ever get sick of cake batter?

So when I stopped by Buttercelli Organic Bakeshop and saw Funfetti scones, I knew I had to try one and see how they compared. And come on, I’ll use any excuse to have sprinkles at breakfast. I ordered one gluten-free funfetti scone and a coffee and sat outside to conduct my taste test.

First, a little bit about Buttercelli Organic Bakeshop:

A little bakery located in Sherman Oaks, CA, Buttercelli’s claim to fame is its alternative diet baked goods. While they do have a selection of traditional baked goods (I’ll have to try them someday) they specialize in gluten-free, vegan, gluten-free vegan, and Paleo diet friendly treats. Oh, and EVERYTHING is organic! Their fresh baked goodies are all free of GMOs, corn syrup, artificial flavorings and colorings, and preservatives. So it fits perfectly in the health-obsessed Los Angeles 😉

The storefront itself is pretty tiny. It’s pretty much dominated by the bakery case and the employee area behind it. There is a small little counter-style table inside, but mostly you are going to be sitting outside if you are eating in. The other wall has a few cutesy items to buy like cupcake toppers and the like.

I’ve been here twice, and so far I’ve had a 50/50 experience with the employees. Some of them have been very nice and warm, others have been kind of off, like they are bored of working and are bored of everyone coming in asking the same questions.

What do they sell? An assortment of savory individual quiches, bars, brownies, cookies, cupcakes, muffins, coffee cakes (which I have to say their GF coffee cake is just about one of the best I’ve ever had, beats out all the traditional ones!), donuts, and of course, SCONES. The bakery case is divided up by allergy/dietary preference.

Alrighty, on to the funfetti scone and an Americano.

I like coffee, and maybe it’s just what I ordered, but I did not like this one. I can’t really explain why because I am not a coffee connoisseur like I am a tea one, so I’ll just have to settle for saying I wouldn’t order their coffee again.

But what we really care about is the scone, right? For starters, it is small like mine are so I liked that. Left me with plenty of room for that scrum-diddly-umptious coffee cake I mentioned. The scone gets its Funfetti name from the coating of sprinkles on top as well as the sprinkles baked throughout the scone. Unlike mine, this is just a plain vanilla scone and not a cake batter flavored one.

It kind of tasted like a thick, cakier sugar cookie. The outside edges were a little crumbly while the inside was soft and dense. Unsurprisingly given the sheer quantity of sprinkles on this scone, sprinkle was a predominant flavor. Yes, sprinkle is a flavor. At least in my book. I can definitely taste a distinct flavor from different kinds of sprinkles. I digress.

So to answer the question at hand: Did I like the Buttercelli Funfetti scone? Mostly. I like that it is gluten free but doesn’t taste different than a wheat scone. It was still the same tight crumb and not the gummy or rock hard texture you sometimes get with gluten free baked goods. The flavor was pretty standard. Nothing to particularly write home about, but it is something I would order again if I was at the bakery. I love the pretty colors of the sprinkles, but wasn’t as happy that they tended to fall off the top of the scone and roll around my napkin. Of course that’s what you would expect with a top covered in sprinkles instead of just baked throughout.

Buttercelli Organic Bakeshop is definitely a place to check out if you want a breakfast treat or a dessert, but if you’re looking for a cream tea style experience look elsewhere. Still, I am looking forward to trying more of their goodies!
